Allegiant eyes Fresno for Hawaii-bound flights
Allegiant Air, which flies from Fresno to Las Vegas, will start offering direct flights to Hawaii in summer 2012 and is considering Fresno as one of the departure cities.
The airline recently gained approval from the Federal Aviation Administration to start operating Boeing 757s, which will allow it to schedule flights across the Pacific, said spokeswoman Jordan McGee.
McGee said the company will announce early next year which cities will offer the Hawaii-bound flights. Fresno is among several western U.S. cities under consideration.

CHICAGO — A five-hour computer outage that virtually shut down United Airlines on Friday night and early Saturday is a stark reminder of how dependent airlines have become on technology.
Passengers saw their flight information vanish from airport screens, and thousands were stranded as United canceled 36 flights and delayed 100 worldwide.
The airline still had no explanation Saturday afternoon for the outage. But things could have been much worse.

On the past few Sundays, one of The Bee’s advertisers has been Air Canada, and on June 30, it was advertising flights to Calgary, Canada from Los Angeles. Why can’t we get Air Canada to come to Fresno Yosemite International Airport?
Air Canada flies to Mexico with places not covered by our current Mexican airlines, like San Jose Del Cabo, Morelia, Cancun and others. Air Canada could easily have flights to these places come back to Fresno and resume to Calgary or to some other Canadian city.
The people of Fresno and Clovis would benefit from another foreign airline. We need to invite Air Canada to Fresno. Many of us have never been to Canada. This would be a grand opportunity for many of us.
Rumblings that Allegiant Air could offer nonstop flights from Fresno to Hawaii next year are stirring excitement among local travel professionals.
Currently, Valley residents visiting Hawaii must choose between taking a short-hop flight from Fresno to either San Francisco or Los Angeles, or driving to one city or the other, to catch a connecting flight to Hawaii.
The cost of flying to San Francisco or Los Angeles, versus the time to drive to either city, “is kind of a tradeoff, and everyone has to weigh whether it’s worth it,” said Mark Lewis, manager of Lewis Travel Cruises and Altour Co. in Fresno. “A direct flight from Fresno would pull a lot of that business. I know we could give them plenty of business.”
So far, however, Allegiant’s not saying where its Hawaii flights will take to the sky.
“Right now, all of our West Coast small cities are on the table for discussion,” said Kristine Cooper, an Allegiant spokeswoman. Cooper said she didn’t know when the airline will make a decision.
