Local softballers in Hawaii this week

Five local softball players are in Honolulu, Hawaii this week competing with a team from Sierra Vista in a seven team softball tournament.

Jessica Garcia, Andrea Lugo, Nythzia Machado, Marissa Morales and Jenessa Salazar have been playing with the Arizona Panic softball team for several weeks.

Through serious fundraising efforts the team has managed to raise money to travel to Hawaii and compete Thursday through Sunday in the 2011 Kaikamahine Invitational.

Other teams competing in the tournament are: Guava Jam Black – Mililani, Hawaii;

Kaikamahine – Honolulu, Hawaii; Illinois Elite – Normal, Illinois; Salinas Wildcats – Salinas, California; Southern California Pumas “ California and the Warrington Blue Thunder – Warrington, Pennsylvania.

Each team is guaranteed at least four games with three games in pool play which will be followed by a single elimination tournament.

The week will also include a college camp for those interested; potential scrimmage games, tournament and several days free time.

The Az. Panic Softball Club is focused on providing its players the opportunity to be competitive, have fun, and to develop into talented softball players through hard work and a love for the game.

According to the mission statement on the internet the group believe that they provide a viable option for players that have positive attitudes, a willingness to work and who want to play for a “players first” focused team, that puts positive instruction, sportsmanship, good citizenship and “love of the game” at a high level of importance.

The team travels to various tournaments throughout the United States, to give its players exposure.

The group is affordable, and works hard to get players to the next level through practice, camps, private instruction and by providing help with the “College Process.”

In three years of 18 and under age group softball the Az. Panic has eight current and former team members playing softball in college and many others attending college with their focus on academics and seven current players weighing offers from colleges.

The team is coached by Jeff Baker and his daughter Ashley, both of Sierra Vista.
